Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

NJCU Comes from Behind as The Scarlet Raiders Lose at Home

NEWARK, NJ | Rutgers-Newark women's soccer (5-9-3) fought hard all night, but they struggled to match the intensity of NJCU (6-4-6) who played spoiler on senior night. Final score: 2-1.

NJCU started out hot, putting early pressure on the Scarlet Raiders' goal. Goalkeeper Angela Amaya made a remarkable diving save to her right to keep a Gothic Knights shot attempt from sliding into the bottom corner.

The Gothic Knights continued to work towards their opponent's goal, winning several free kicks that they launched into the 18-yard box. However, the Rutgers-Newark defense stood strong. Toward the end of the half, the Scarlet Raiders found their chances. With about 10 minutes remaining, Isabella Tabja stood over a free kick around 40 yards out. She uncorked a powerful shot that required an excellent top corner save to keep it out.

Then, in the 37th minute, Rutgers-Newark found their breakthrough. After winning a free kick near the corner, they whipped the ball into the box and a goalmouth scramble ensued. Eventually, the ball came to Maria Castillo, and she emphatically smashed it into the net.

NJCU surged back a bit after conceding, but failed to break through the host's back line. At halftime, the score stood at 1-0.

In the second half, NJCU searched hard for an equalizer. Angela Amaya made several important saves, including a reaction save off of a corner in minute 47 and a one-on-one stop with her foot in minute 57. The Gothic Knights even hit the crossbar with a freekick in minute 65.

Eventually, the visitors would reap their reward for their work. In the 68th minute, Gineth Arias Martinez picked up the ball from Amanda Papamanolis. She took a touch to her left and fired a shot into the top corner. The two teams were back on level terms: 1-1.

After the goal, the game really began to open up. The ball traveled up and down the field as each side pushed hard for the three points. The game had been physical all night, but the intensity dramatically increased as the pressure rose.

And things would unfortunately get worse for the Scarlet Raiders. A hopeful ball over the top couldn't be dealt with by their back line, and NJCU's Nyrohah Alvarenga capitalized on the mistake to put the Gothic Knights on top.

Rutgers-Newark would not go down without a fight. They threw bodies forward in an attempt to find a goal. Leila Ettayebi got in behind the defense in the 82nd minute, but could not direct her shot on target.

A heartbreaking loss for the Scarlet Raiders, who have now been knocked out of NJAC playoff contention.

Women's soccer will play their final game of the season this Wednesday, October 30th. They will host Ramapo at 7:00 pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
