Erick Cortes Sends the Scarlet Raiders to the Playoffs

MAHWAH, NJ | In a must-win game, Rutgers-Newark's (9-6-4) star striker came through, sending Ramapo (8-5-4) packing and securing an NJAC playoff spot in the process. Final score: 2-1.

All was silent for the first ten minutes, then the action really kicked into gear. A pair of Ramapo shots, then three from the Scarlet Raiders, followed by four corners and two shots for the hosts. The game had suddenly exploded into an exciting slug fest.

And it was Rutgers-Newark who would make the first meaningful move. In the 32nd minute, Edgar Silva hammered home for his fourth goal of the season, putting his team in front in a do-or-die scenario.

However, their lead would not stand for long. Just five minutes later, Gianfranco Ponce finished off an assist from Jalal Khalifeh to put the hosts back on level terms. Safe to say, it was game on.

The Scarlet Raiders threw everything they had at the Roadrunners' goal in the second half. While Rutgers-Newark needed all three points, Ramapo did not. They could sneak into the conference tournament with a draw.

As the clock continued to tick, it looked more and more like the points would be shared and the Scarlet Raiders' season would end. However, Erick Cortes was yet to have his say. In minute 84, he found the crucial breakthrough, restoring Rutgers-Newark's lead that they would not relinquish again. Thanks to Cortes, the Scarlet Raiders took home all three points and a playoff berth!

Men's soccer will head to Camden to take on their fellow Rutgers affiliates this Saturday, November 2nd at 11:00 am. The winner of that game will head to Glassboro to take on Rowan in the NJAC semifinals.
