Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Holton Drops 27 as the Scarlet Raiders Climb to 2-0

FLORHAM PARK, NJ | The star senior was one rebound short of another double-double in an impressive win against a solid Eagles (0-1) squad. Final score: 82-72

St. Elizabeth was rolling early. They established a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes, and Rutgers-Newark could not get a shot to fall. They didn't pick up their first points until 5:37 into the game when none other than Levi Holton finished at the rim.

After their first basket, the floodgates opened. The Scarlet Raiders went on a run to lead 15-9, and then 20-15. The ball was spread around, with six different players contributing to the tally.

However, the Eagles were still right there. They tied it up at 20 with 8:18 left in the half, but Holton was beginning to take over. He and Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd found another gear and Rutgers-Newark started to pull away. A three pointer from Eli Camacho put the cherry on top, and by halftime the score sat at 39-26. A whopping 13 point gap.

The second half was slow at the outset, but the Scarlet Raiders continued to build upon their lead. The advantage ballooned to 21 at its peak, and at 61-39 with 11:21 on the clock, the game seemed to be all but concluded.

But the Eagles kept on flapping their wings. The hosts slowly chipped away at the deficit, and it was working. They eventually cut the lead to single digits with just under four minutes left.

The Scarlet Raiders looked shaky for a moment, but they held the line. Thanks to clutch free throw shooting, and a gutsy performance from Travis Miles, who punctuated the game with a dunk and finished with 16 total points, Rutgers-Newark left Florham Park with a ten point victory.

Men's basketball will play next on Monday, November 11th, when they travel to Morristown, NJ to take on Saint Elizabeth University at 7:00 pm.
