Scarlet Raiders Fall to Marywood on the Road

SCRANTON, PA | Rutgers-Newark (0-3) went behind early and couldn't quite bring it back, giving Marywood (2-1) their second win of the season by a score of 77-67.

The beginning was back and forth, and then the Pacers found their stride. Going up 14 in the first quarter, the Scarlet Raiders had to find some points to stay within striking distance. The offense produced as needed, led by Zoe Francis-Bunkley, and the visitors ended the first quarter down by 7.

After the first break, the home team took control. After building their lead back to double digits, they held onto their advantage consistently throughout the period. Aliyah Sanchez and Sanaa Brodie were putting up points for the Scarlet Raiders, but Marywood were too hot to handle. By the conclusion of the first half, the gap had grown to 21.

In the third quarter, Rutgers-Newark kept abreast of the hosts and slowly worked their way back into the game. Brodie continued to score - she ended the game with a team-leading 18 points. Arlenny Medina also contributed with 9 of her own. Thirty minutes in, the Pacers were up by 15. Not completely out of reach, but the Scarlet Raiders had much work to do if they wanted to steal the game away.

However, the visitors seemed up to the task. In the first two minutes of the final period, the lead shrunk to 11 and it looked as though the home fans might get an exciting conclusion. Rutgers-Newark continued to scratch and claw until they were within six, but that was as close as they could get. Marywood held firm, and clinched the win after a rollercoaster of a fourth quarter.

Women's basketball hits the court again tomorrow, November 15th, in their first game of the John K. Adams Tip-Off Classic. They will face off against FDU-Florham at 8:00pm right here in the Golden Dome.
