Shorthanded Scarlet Raiders Emerge Victorious and Advance in the ECAC Tournament

NEWARK, NJ | In an absolutely wild playoff game, Rutgers-Newark (10-7-4) eked out a close victory over FDU-Florham (12-8-1) with a final score of 3-2.

The Scarlet Raiders looked confident in the opening stages of the game. They threatened the Knights' goal consistently, including an impressive effort from Edgar Silva from long range that hit the inside of the post.

In the 10th minute, Silva was involved again. He crossed the ball into the box and Erick Cortes nodded home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Both sides had many good chances in the spell that followed the opening goal. Rutgers-Newark were creating shots that just missed the target, and Pedro Flores made several flying saves throughout the game. All things considered, the first half likely deserved more goals, but at the break it remained 1-0.

FDU-Florham started the second half looking determined to score. In the 48th minute, Jonathan Shirley headed the ball just over the crossbar from a corner kick. One minute later, Genti Dauti played a through ball over the top to Drilon Toska, who got in front of his defender and snuck the ball in at the near post to level the score. It was back to square one for Rutgers-Newark.

Their goal only emboldened the visitors more. Lowen Gabriel blocked a shot at point-blank range, and Pedro Flores made a diving save to his left to keep the Knights from scoring again.

In the 65th minute, Bryan Rodriguez committed a foul in the box to give FDU-Florham a penalty. To make things worse, Rodriguez was issued his second yellow and was sent off. Toska converted the penalty after an initial save from Flores to give the Knights their first lead of the game. 2-1.

However, the Scarlet Raiders were far from down and out. Four minutes after going down both a man and a goal, Ian Brown worked his way into the box and finished brilliantly into the bottom-left corner to tie the game again. Incredibly, Rutgers-Newark was back in the game with 10 men.

And then the unthinkable happened - they scored another! In minute 74, a series of brilliant passes gave Pablo Moreno an open goal for an easy tap-in. Somehow, some way, the Scarlet Raiders scored two goals with a man disadvantage, and they had taken their lead right back.

Unfortunately, in the 81st minute, there was an incident between players that led to four red cards, two for each team. For the last nine minutes, Rutgers-Newark defended fiercely with eight men against nine, and they got the job done. What a rollercoaster of a game!

Men's soccer will continue their ECAC campaign tomorrow, November 17th. They will take on Alvernia at 1:00pm right here on Frederick Douglass Field.
