Second Half Scoring Spree Sees Scarlet Raiders Fall Short of USMMA

KINGS POINT, NY | US Merchant Marine Academy (3-1) put up 47 points in the second half to take the victory over Rutgers-Newark (3-2), with a final score of 77-69.

The game started out relatively even, with Shy'Heed Jenkins-Floyd doing the majority of the scoring for the Scarlet Raiders. With just over 12 minutes left in the half, he hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 8.

However, it wouldn't be long until the Mariners began to pull away. They went on a nine point run in three minutes to go up 17-8. Rutgers-Newark fought their way back, led by the scoring of Levi Holton who put up 11 in the first half. By the end of the first period, the Scarlet Raiders had taken the lead, but there was only one point to separate the two teams.

The second half started off much like the first, with three lead changes in the first six minutes. With 14:22 remaining in the game, USMMA took the lead and never looked back. Their advantage grew to 11 about halfway into the period, and they were able to maintain that gap until there were five minutes left on the clock.

Levi Holton and Pascal Dodard led the charge back again for the Scarlet Raiders. They had plenty of time to take this game, and they were working to get back on level terms. Eli Camacho hit a three to bring them within four points with two and a half minutes remaining, but unfortunately that's as close as they could get. The Mariners clung on to their lead and came away with the eight-point victory. It's the first away loss of the season for the Scarlet Raiders in a hard fought battle.

Men's basketball is back in action this Tuesday, November 26th with the beginning of NJAC play. They face off against Rutgers-Camden at 8:00pm right here in the Golden Dome.
