Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men’s Soccer Completes Impressive Season as ECAC Runners-up

HUNTINGDON, PA | The Scarlet Raiders (11-8-4) fought hard, but they were unable to overcome a formidable opponent in Juniata (13-3-6) in the ECAC Championship game, with a final score of 3-1.

The match had drama right from the start. The Eagles were awarded a penalty in the fourth minute, but goalkeeper Pedro Flores came up clutch and prevented Rutgers-Newark from going down early.

However, the penalty save did not keep things even for long. Just five minutes later, Shawn Tanaka set up Chase Colino for a Juniata goal. The hosts were putting on the pressure early, and it was up to the Scarlet Raiders to respond.

With momentum continuing to build in their favor, Juniata kept on coming. They put up two corner kicks and three shots until they found their second breakthrough of the game. In the 29th minute, Brandon Marzula hit the back of the net with a quickly taken free kick to double the Eagles' lead.

The second goal finally brought Rutgers-Newark to life. Two minutes later, Brandon Castro brought the Scarlet Raiders back within one with a beautiful looping effort from an improbable angle and distance. His incredible chip shot gave his team a needed energy boost, and suddenly it was game on once more.

Rutgers-Newark pushed for an equalizer before the break, attempting several shots in the closing stages of the half, but after the first 45 minutes, the score stood at 2-1.

In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders continued to work their way back into the game. Martin Pulgarin, Ian Brown, and Jonah Dias all had attempts on goal, but there was no breakthrough to be had. In the 79th minute, Shawn Tanaka put the nail in the coffin by scoring the Eagles' third goal of the game.

And that is how it would finish. Rutgers-Newark men's soccer fell just short of an ECAC championship, but they had a gutsy tournament run full of memorable moments, and many will look back on this 2024 season with joy. Pedro Flores, Brandon Castro, and Darius Holmes all earned spots on the ECAC All-Tournament team.

This is a young team with many positives to take away from a strong campaign that had both regular season and playoff success. The Scarlet Raiders will certainly be a team to watch in NJAC men's soccer in 2025.
