Women's Basketball Season Comes to a Close with Loss to TCNJ

EWING, NJ | Aliyah Sanchez paced the Scarlet Raiders women's basketball team with a career night against a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) powerhouse, The College of New Jersey. The Scarlet Raiders' season would come to a close this evening after Rutgers-Newark fell 75-45 to TCNJ.

Rutgers-Newark (2-23, 1-17) was led by Sanchez's 16-point, 10-rebound double-double while Samiyah Horton added 12 points and three steals. Rutgers-Newark scored 36 of its points in the paint while shooting 35.2% from the floor. TCNJ (17-8, 14-4) will continue its season in the NJAC Tournament after the NJAC win over the Scarlet Raiders. TCNJ was led by Katie Fricker's 14 points and Natalie Kolb's seven rebounds.

The Scarlet Raiders got off to a slow start against the Lions, falling behind 12-1 in the opening four minutes of play. Over the next six minutes, the Scarlet Raiders' offense led by Sanchez closed the gap with an 11-5 run. The Lions's offense regained form in the second quarter as they tallied a game-high 25 points while holding Rutgers-Newark to just six.

Leah Connell put the Scarlet Raiders on the board in the third quarter with a layup off of the glass. Tracey Ilderis cut the lead down further off of a steal and a fast break layup. Despite the spark in offense, that carried over to the fourth, by the Scarlet Raiders they were not able to close the gap enough to steal a win from the Lions.

With the loss the Scarlet Raiders' season comes to a close and they will look to rebuild stronger for next season.
