Women's Soccer Falls to Eastern 3-2 in Season Opener

NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team opened up their season tonight in the Brick City Classic. They took on Eastern University (1-0-0) for the first time in program history, and the Eagles managed to sneak a narrow victory, with a final score of 3-2.

The Scarlet Raiders (0-1-0) were lively in the opening stages of the game. Leila Ettayebi gave the home side an early lead with a beautiful dipping strike from outside the 18-yard box in the 11th minute. Ettayebi's effort sailed into the top-right corner with pace and precision, giving the goalkeeper Brooke Moskey no chance of keeping it out.

However, that lead would not stand for long, as Emma Bennett found Billinda Leisner in behind Rutgers-Newark's defense to bring things level in the 19th minute. And the Eagles weren't done there - they notched a second goal in the 34th minute thanks to a thundering volley from Leah Fowler from the edge of the penalty area. At half time, the visitors maintained their one goal advantage.

Rutgers-Newark pushed hard in the second half, constantly peppering the opposition goal - they finished the game with 20 total shots. In the 52nd minute, Eliza Haghighi nodded home a corner kick from Leila Ettayebi to level the score once more. The Scarlet Raiders looked poised to take the lead in the following spell, but they could not punch the ticket. Eastern's second half goalkeeper, Faith Leake, made some impressive saves to keep her team in the game.

As the clock wound down, Eastern forged an opportunity on the counter attack. Nicole Eveland found the perfect through ball, putting Mia Zucker through on goal. She calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-right corner, giving the Eagles the lead with 2:27 to go. Eastern hung onto their lead for the final minutes, and left with all the points.

The Scarlet Raiders play next on Sunday, September 1st at 5:00 pm against Purchase College in their final match of the Brick City Classic.
