Women’s Soccer Rout Purchase College for First Win of the Season

NEWARK, NJ | After a tough loss to kick off the 2024 campaign, the Scarlet Raiders (1-1-0) bounced back to secure a victory over the Purchase College Panthers (0-2-0), with a convincing scoreline of 7-1.

Rutgers-Newark was pushing early, with several shots from Leila Ettayebi and Emily Karlicki within the first 5 minutes. The attempts on net were flying all around Panthers goalkeeper Carolyn Hough, but she remained resolute - she ended the game with an astounding 23 saves.

Despite the dominance from the host team, Purchase College jumped out ahead thanks to a long range strike from Rebecca Quick in the 28th minute. It was their first shot of the game, but it was the first shot to find the back of the net.

That lead stood until the tail end of the first half. In the final four minutes, Vielka Fernandez and Araxiel Cardenas-Saenz both found openings, and the Scarlet Raiders' quick turnaround gave them a one goal advantage going into the break.

In the second half, it was all Rutgers-Newark. Leila Ettayebi collected a remarkable 8-minute hat trick to put the game out of reach for Purchase, and goals from Kaylee Tucker and Mileni Aguilar tied a bow on the occasion.

"It was a team effort with everyone contributing," said head coach Nate Guagliardi after the game. "Especially the players that came off the bench and gave us the spark we were looking for." Needless to say, it was an important win to get this season on the right track going forward.

UP NEXT
The Scarlet Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 4th in Newburgh, NY. They will be taking on the Mount Saint Mary College Knights for an evening competition, with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm.
