Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Fernandez and Ettayebi Shine in 4-2 Win Over FDU-Florham

NEWARK, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (2-3) looked dominant and confident, taking home a big win early on in this 2024 season against a strong FDU-Florham team (3-2) with a final score of 4-2.

The play was even in the opening stages, with both teams showing flashes and threatening their opposition. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a J'nyyah Young through ball found Leila Ettayebi through on goal, and she tucked it away to put the home side in front in the 15th minute.

Despite the setback, the Devils came to play. 12 minutes later, Mia Lopez put Ashley Dietrich in behind, and she snuck her shot in the near post to tie it up. The score was 1-1 after 27 minutes.

But it didn't stay that way for long. Rutgers-Newark substitute Vielka Fernandez proved to be a difference-maker, and she curled a long range effort into the top-left corner from the edge of the 18-yard box in minute 29. 7 minutes later, she was on the scoresheet again. Another over-the-top long ball, this time from Seoane Oaxaca, allowed Fernandez an easy one-on-one opportunity that she did not pass up. At half time, the home team led 3-1.

The Scarlet Raiders came out with energy in the second half. Despite their pressure, it was FDU-Florham that found the back of the net via Georgia Oberman. The looping effort from the defender brought the visitors back within a goal, and suddenly it was game on.

Even though their opposition edged closer, Rutgers-Newark never wavered. Leila Ettayebi collected a second goal from another breakaway in the 68th minute, and the Scarlet Raiders rode out their 2 goal lead from there.

"We've been close for a couple of games and tonight we saw our training translate to the pitch," said head coach Nate Guagliardi. "I think we can score goals with the best of them, and tonight was a great team effort starting from the starters to everyone that came off the bench and gave us quality minutes. This win was a great confidence builder for us and it's going to be needed as we head closer to conference play."

It was an impressive and important win for Rutgers-Newark women's soccer, and they look to continue their forward momentum against Albright College on September 14th at 7:00 pm in Reading, PA.
