Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Scarlet Raiders Cruise Past CCNY for 6-1 Victory

NEWARK, NJ | Women's soccer (4-3-2) was never in doubt against the visiting Beavers (1-5) as they pushed their record back above .500. Final score: 6-1.

Rutgers-Newark was electric from the start, peppering the net with five shots in the first ten minutes of play. The early aggression was not in vain, as Dana Nunez found Eliza Haghighi in the 10th minute. Haghighi's shot from the edge of the box nestled in the bottom-left corner to give the Scarlet Raiders the lead.

The Scarlet Raiders cooled off slightly from there, being caught offside a few times on the attack. The Beavers were applying a high press, which the home side was dealing with well until minute 27, when striker Husna Khan caused trouble in the box and won a penalty kick. However, she put her effort from the spot over the crossbar. A huge let off to say the least.

Then, less than a minute later, Ruby Hogue burst through the midfield and carried the ball into the attack until she found the feet of Leila Ettayebi. Ettayebi took one touch and fired a dipping shot off the half volley over the head of CCNY goalkeeper Laila Issa. Seconds after their lead was threatened, they found a second goal to give themselves a cushion.

The Scarlet Raiders weren't done in the first half. Dana Nunez collected her second assist of the game, setting up Vielka Fernandez to extend the lead to three in the 37th minute. The sophomore substitute rolled the ball calmly into the net from short range, raising her season tally to five.

The second half did not get off to a strong start for Rutgers-Newark. A defensive mistake gave the ball to Husna Khan, who poked it past goalkeeper Jillian Jones to get the Beavers on the board. After 48 minutes, the score stood at 3-1.

The CCNY goal snapped the Scarlet Raiders awake. They went right down and secured a quick response. Emily Gavidia found herself wide open in the penalty area thanks to a first-time pass from Ashley Gonzalez. A special goal for Gavidia, finding the back of the net for the first time this season.

In the 64th minute, a familiar name graced the scoresheet again. Ettayebi struck a searching through ball that found Kimberly Vera, who converted the simple chance to bring the lead to four. Another first-time goalscorer for Rutgers-Newark, who had 31 different players enter the field of play tonight.

And the Scarlet Raiders still had one more goal left in them! With just under four minutes on the clock, Ashley Gonzalez smashed a long range effort into the upper 90, wrapping up the evening with a highlight reel finish.

A convincing and comfortable win for the Scarlet Raiders, and a great way to build confidence before heading into a tough NJAC gauntlet.

Women's soccer will begin conference play this Saturday, September 28th when they head Glassboro, NJ to take on Rowan University at 11:00 am.
