Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Outdueled by Rowan in Saturday Morning Matchup

GLASSBORO, NJ | The Scarlet Raiders (4-4-2) fought valiantly, but ultimately Rowan (6-0-2), who are receiving votes in the national poll, were too much to handle.

Rutgers-Newark set the tone early. Leila Ettayebi registered the first shot of the game in the first minute, forcing a save out of goalkeeper Calista Burke.

However, the Profs were ready as well. They attacked early and often, collecting goals in the sixth and eighth minutes. All of the sudden, the Scarlet Raiders found themselves two goals behind.

Rowan was not satisfied, and they continued to lay the pressure on thick. They tallied an impressive 19 shots, with 13 of them on target. Despite the bombardment, no goals were scored in the rest of the half. This was largely thanks to the play of Angela Amaya, who picked up 10 saves - a standout performance despite the final result.

The second half was much quieter, as the Scarlet Raiders defense held their opponents at bay. But they couldn't hold the ship steady forever - in the 73rd minute, Sophie Veloso committed a foul in the box, and Rowan added a third goal in the form of a penalty kick.

A frustrating day for Rutgers-Newark women's soccer, as they struggled to produce much in the form of attack. Rowan controlled most of the game, and they reaped the reward for doing so.

The Scarlet Raiders will look to bounce back this Wednesday, October 2nd, when they host Rutgers-Camden at 7:00 pm on Frederick Douglass Field.
