NEWARK, NJ | The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team faced a tough test against AMCC powerhouse Penn State-Behrend on Saturday morning, falling 2-0 in a hard-fought battle at Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders (1-3) struggled to find their rhythm in the first half, with their lone shot coming from Leila Ettayebi. The newly-formed backline held firm for the first 16 minutes, but Penn State-Behrend (3-0) broke through when the 6'1" Trinity Prestash powered home a header off a corner kick. Despite relentless pressure from Penn State, goalkeeper Jillian Jones kept Rutgers-Newark in the game with three key saves.
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders' offense came alive, matching Penn State's seven shots and testing their keeper, Riley Morningstar, with three on target. However, Morningstar stood firm, making four crucial saves to preserve the shutout. Penn State-Behrend sealed the game in the 70th minute, with Rachel Sickeri delivering a low cross to Marlene Andrade, who tapped it into the net for a 2-0 final.
