Women's Volleyball Blanked in Both Games in Suffolk Trimatch

BOSTON, MA | The Rutgers-Newark women's volleyball squad traveled up to Massachusetts to face off against Suffolk University (4-0) and Eastern Connecticut State (3-1).

Match 1: Suffolk 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-19)

The game started out back and forth, with neither side gaining any major momentum. Then Suffolk exploded. They rattled off 12 points consecutively, a momentum swing that two Rutgers-Newark timeouts couldn't stop. Leaving the score at 23-9, the Rams easily closed out from there.

The second set started much like how the first one ended. Suffolk jumped out to a commanding 8-3 lead. However, the Scarlet Raiders, led by Taylor White and Tracey Ilderis, worked to bring it back to within two points. But the Rams remained steadfast, and put the comeback to an end with a 13-3 run.

Suffolk captured an early advantage once more in the third set, with the Scarlet Raiders finding themselves behind 13-5. In need of a win, they fought vigilantly, but they couldn't put together a run of their own. At the end of the day, it was the Rams' ability to string together long runs that put them over the top.

Match 2: Eastern Connecticut State 3, Rutgers-Newark 0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-21)

The Warriors came out hot, and set the tone with a 14-3 run to begin the game. Rutgers-Newark fought back hard, with a tight exchange of points in the middle phase of the set, but Eastern Connecticut turned it back on, taking the win with a 6-1 run.

The second set began in the same way as the first, but the Scarlet Raiders came back with more fire on this occasion. Tracey Ilderis led the effort with 8 kills as they went on a 4 point run at match point, but they just couldn't prevent the Warriors from dealing the final blow.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to improve as the game went on. They went at their opposition hard in set three, with crucial defensive playmaking from Taylor White. However, Eastern Connecticut found their feet and established a 17-11 lead. From there, they were able to ride out the surge from Rutgers-Newark and complete the sweep. A frustrating day for the Scarlet Raiders, as they couldn't manage to take a set from either of their opponents.
