MAHWAH, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team fell on the road to Ramapo, 70-63, on Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.
Rutgers-Newark began the game on a 7-0 run, as it held Ramapo without a point until 5:41 to go in the first quarter. The Raiders held on to their lead never allowing the Roadrunners to get closer to within three points.
Ramapo tied the game at 13-All on a layup with 8:26 left in the second quarter. The Raiders connected on a free throw and a layup to take a 33-28 advantage into halftime.
Both teams managed to put up 17 points each in the third quarter, making it a five-point game with Rutgers-Newark leading heading into the final quarter.
A Zoe Francis-Bunkley jumper gave the Raiders their largest lead of nine points with 8:32 remaining in the game. The Roadrunners slowly began to chip away at the Rutgers-Newark lead, and with 2:08 left the home team knocked down a pair of free throws to take their first lead of the game, 61-60. The Roadrunners scored their last 12 points at the free throw line to secure the victory.
Rutgers-Newark (3-10, 0-6 NJAC) was led in scoring by both Arlenny Medina and Nicole Tamario, who both had 12 points. Five players grabbed five rebounds for the Raiders. Raihanna Abdus-Salaam led the way with five steals. The Raiders shot 29 percent from the floor and struggled from the three-point line connecting on only 2 of 12 attempts.
Lauren Flatt led Ramapo (2-11,1-5 NJAC) with 24 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Jocelyn Huanacaya tallied 18 points, five rebounds, and five steals. Ramapo shot 35 percent from the field and made 2 out of 4 three-point attempts.
The Raiders return home on Saturday, Jan. 11 of game one of the doubleheader with the men beginning at 5:30 p.m.
