NEWARK, N.J. – On Senior Night, the Rutgers–Newark Scarlet Raiders women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 draw against Stockton University on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field.
Prior to kickoff, the Scarlet Raiders honored their senior class of Gabrielle Negvesky, Viviana Valencia, Mariana Valencia, Janelle Atta, Maria Castillo, and Ruby Hogue, for their dedication and contributions to the program.
Stockton struck first in the 36th minute when Makayla Jaffe connected on a feed from Mia Caruso and Jadelyn Sayrafe to give the Ospreys a 1-0 lead, and Rutgers–Newark went into halftime trailing by one.
The Scarlet Raiders responded in the 61st minute as Vielka Fernandez found the back of the net off an assist from Hogue to even the score at 1-1. The teams went back and forth the rest of the contest but neither could find the back of the net again.
Rutgers–Newark outshot Stockton 10-5 and held a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal but couldn't find a late winner. Goalkeeper Shaina Sackett made one save for the Scarlet Raiders, while Morgan Keil tallied five stops for Stockton.
With the draw, Rutgers–Newark moves to 8-7-2 overall and 2-3-2 in NJAC play and keeps them in contention for the NJAC playoffs, while Stockton sits at 7-4-6 overall and 2-2-3 in the conference.
