Jersey City, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team dropped a close 2-1 decision to New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon in NJAC play.
The Scarlet Raiders took the lead in the 35th minute when Avril Sibaja slipped a shot under the goalkeeper off a well-placed assist from Mariana Valencia, giving Rutgers-Newark a 1-0 advantage heading into halftime.
NJCU responded quickly after the break, leveling the match in the 46th minute as Nyrohah Alvarenga scored on a pass from Gineth Martinez. The Gothic Knights then took the lead in the 66th minute when Kyanah-Belle Jean-Louis converted the eventual game-winner, assisted by Alvarenga.
Rutgers-Newark recorded six shots, including two on target, while NJCU tallied 11 total shots with five on goal. Alisha Perez made three saves in the effort.
Rutgers-Newark now stands at 8-8-2 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play with one match remaining in the regular season with NJAC playoffs in sight.
