NEWARK, NJ - The Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team fell 73-53 to visiting Kean University tonight at The Golden Dome in their season finale.
The first quarter was close with both teams trading baskets. The Scarlet Raiders went on a 5-0 run to take a two-point lead at 9-7. The Cougars responded with a 5-0 run of their own to end the first quarter ahead 12-9.
With the scoreboard at 19-19 with 6:47 to go in the second quarter, Kean hit back-to-back three-pointers, followed by a jumper and a layup to go up by 10 points.
A 10-2 run by the Scarlet Raiders closed the Cougars' gap and Rutgers-Newark found itself within two points at 31-29.
Down 35-32 at halftime, the Scarlet Raiders had to come out with renewed energy in the second half.
While the energy was there, the shots just did not fall for the Scarlet Raiders in the second half. The Cougars stayed one step ahead in the third and fourth quarters, eventually pulling away faster than Rutgers-Newark could get the shots to drop.
Rutgers-Newark received 27 points from its bench and produced 34 points in the paint. It wasn't enough as the Scarlet Raiders closed out their season tonight.
Tracey Ilderis led the way for Rutgers-Newark (3-22, 0-18 NJAC) with a double-double of 18 points and tying her career-high of 16 rebounds. Quanajah Felder added 13 points and six rebounds. The Scarlet Raiders shot 29.9 percent from the floor and 63.2 percent from the free throw line.
Erika Mercedes scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory for Kean (12-13, 9-9 NJAC). Brittany Graff added 19 points, five rebounds, and five assists. Maddison Vaughn rounded out the top scorers with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Cougars shot 36.7 percent from the floor and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe.
