Scarlet Raiders Drop Hard-Fought Match on the Road

Shenandoah, VA – The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team came up just short in a 2-1 road defeat to Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets struck first in the 10th minute when Nick Mattiace found the back of the net off a setup from Jarbin Rodriguez. The Scarlet Raiders wasted no time with their response, as Esteban Hidalgo delivered the equalizer just 17 seconds later to level the match. Shenandoah regained the advantage shortly before halftime, however, when Dylan Johnson connected off a pass from Grant Otto in the 44th minute to make it 2-1.

Rutgers-Newark created several chances throughout the second half, firing 10 total shots with seven on goal, but Shenandoah's goalkeeper Jake Ziervogel stood tall with five saves to preserve the lead. Ian Brown led the Scarlet Raiders with six shots, including four on target, while Pablo Moreno added three attempts. Goalkeeper Ilan Golden recorded one save for Rutgers-Newark.

Despite controlling stretches of play and generating more quality looks, the Scarlet Raiders were unable to break through again. Rutgers-Newark will look to rebound on Wednesday, September 24th as they return home to host Centenary for the annual Adrian Velazquez Memorial Game.
