GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team opened up NJAC play with a statement victory on Saturday, rallying past #6 Rowan for a 2–1 win on the road.
Rowan struck first in the 16th minute when Davide Caputo scored off a rebound to give the Profs the early lead. he Profs continued to press following the early goal, forcing Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Pedro Flores into several saves to keep his team within striking distance. The Scarlet Raiders generated a handful of chances as the half wore on but could not find an equalizer before halftime.
The Scarlet Raiders stayed composed and answered after halftime, leveling the match at 60:06 when Pablo Moreno calmly buried a penalty kick. Less than five minutes later, Ian Brown delivered the game-winner off an assist from Ali Celik to put the Scarlet Raiders in front.
Rowan outshot Newark 18–8 on the day, but goalkeeper Pedro Flores made four saves to anchor a strong defensive effort that kept the hosts from finding an equalizer. The Scarlet Raiders showed their efficiency by placing four shots on target, including both goals.
The win marks a signature result for Rutgers-Newark as the Scarlet Raiders handed nationally ranked Rowan just its second loss of the season. The Scarlet Raiders will continue NJAC play as they host Rutgers-Camden next Wednesday, October 1st.
