NEWARK, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team closed out the Brick City Classic in winning fashion, defeating Penn State Harrisburg 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Frederick Douglass Field. With the victory, the Scarlet Raiders extended their winning streak to three matches and improved to 3-1 overall, capping off a strong weekend that also included Saturday's 4-0 shutout of Farmingdale State.
The College of New Jersey claimed the 2025 Brick City Classic title after finishing the weekend with a 2-0 record, matching Rutgers-Newark's perfect mark. The Lions secured the crown thanks to an impressive +7 goal differential across their two matches, edging out the Scarlet Raiders' +5 mark. TCNJ earned its victories in convincing fashion, defeating Penn State Harrisburg 4-1 on Saturday before blanking Farmingdale State 4-0 on Sunday.
The match was a back-and-forth affair, but Rutgers-Newark was able to establish control through disciplined play and timely finishing. The Scarlet Raiders outshot Harrisburg 10-8, showing their ability to create chances in both halves. While the Lions brought plenty of physicality to the match, committing six fouls and collecting four yellow cards, Rutgers-Newark remained composed, committing just three fouls and avoiding any bookings. That discipline paid off as the Raiders capitalized on their attacking opportunities with two goals, while limiting Harrisburg to a single strike.
Defensively, Rutgers-Newark showed poise when under pressure. The back line did well to disrupt Harrisburg's attack and limit dangerous chances, while the Scarlet Raiders' goalkeeper added two key saves to protect the lead. On the other end, Penn State Harrisburg's goalkeeper was tested but finished with just one save as the Rutgers-Newark attack pushed the pace and kept the Lions on their heels for much of the match.
This result capped off a dominant showing in the Brick City Classic for the Scarlet Raiders, who outscored their opponents 6-1 across the two matches. With momentum building, the Scarlet Raiders will look to carry their form into the upcoming slate of non-conference and league play.
