Fourth-Quarter Struggles Cost Rutgers-Newark at Goucher

Baltimore, Maryland — Rutgers-Newark and Goucher College went back and forth through three quarters before Goucher pulled away late for a 57-48 victory.The Scarlet Raiders and Goucher traded baskets throughout the opening quarter, with neither side able to gain separation as the period ended tied at 14-14.

Rutgers-Newark turned up the defensive pressure in the second quarter, limiting Goucher to just 6.25 percent shooting from the field. Despite the defensive dominance, Goucher stayed within reach by finding points at the free throw line, and the Scarlet Raiders went into halftime holding only a two-point advantage.

The defensive pressure continued after the break, as Rutgers-Newark held Goucher to 26.3 percent shooting in the third quarter. A late jumper from Quanajah Felder helped push the Scarlet Raiders ahead 40-37 going into the final period.

The fourth quarter is when the tide turned as Rutgers-Newark struggled offensively. The Scarlet Raiders shot just 22.2 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes and were limited to eight points, allowing Goucher to pull away late.

Quanajah Felder recorded a double-double to lead Rutgers-Newark with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Arlenny Medina added 11 points along with two blocks and two steals.

Rutgers-Newark will look to bounce back as they return home on Wednesday, January 7 to host Ramapo College.
