EWING, N.J. – The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team battled TCNJ to a 0-0 draw on Saturday morning in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action at Lions Stadium.
The Scarlet Raiders (5-2-4, 2-1-1 NJAC) recorded 12 shots, putting six on target, while holding the Lions (5-0-7, 1-0-3 NJAC) to eight shots and three on goal.
Rutgers-Newark created several opportunities in the opening half, including a shot from Zahradeen Amadou in the 14th minute that was saved by TCNJ goalkeeper Sean Najdzinowicz. Daniel Velazquez also tested the Lions' defense with two attempts in the 25th minute, while Bryan Valdes forced another save in the 33rd minute.
The match remained scoreless after halftime, with both sides continuing to generate chances. Amadou put another shot on target in the 53rd minute, and Samuel De Souza forced a save in the 69th minute.
Goalkeeper David Bejarno anchored the Scarlet Raiders defensively, finishing with three saves to earn the shutout. Rutgers-Newark's defense continued to hold firm after Ali Celik received a red card in the 78th minute, playing the final stretch a player down.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to push for a breakthrough late in the match, with Noah Russon and Chihiro Suenaga each putting shots on target in the closing minutes, but Najdzinowicz made the saves to preserve the draw.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action as it returns to Frederick Douglass Field on Wednesday, October 14th for a match against SUNY New Paltz.
