Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

BROWN'S LATE GOAL LIFTS SCARLET RAIDERS PAST JOHNS HOPKINS

NEWARK, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark men's soccer team continued its unbeaten start to the season in dramatic fashion Wednesday afternoon, rallying for a 2-1 victory over Johns Hopkins at Frederick Douglass Field.

The Scarlet Raiders improved to 3-0-1 on the season with the win, while Johns Hopkins fell to 2-2-1.

After a scoreless opening half, Johns Hopkins broke through in the 54th minute when Dusty Dwyer found the back of the net off an assist from Connor Wilkes.

Rutgers-Newark responded with sustained pressure and eventually found its equalizer in the 73rd minute. Samuel De Souza set up Ian Brown, who finished the opportunity to bring the match level at 1-1.

The Scarlet Raiders continued to push forward throughout the remainder of the second half, creating several opportunities as they looked to complete the comeback. Rutgers-Newark fired 13 shots in the second half compared to just one from Johns Hopkins, but several chances narrowly missed the mark or were turned away.

With time winding down, Rutgers-Newark finally broke through in the 89th minute. Brown collected the ball and delivered a late strike toward the right corner that rolled into the goal, giving the Scarlet Raiders a 2-1 lead and completing the comeback.

Brown finished the afternoon with both Rutgers-Newark goals, while De Souza recorded the assist on the equalizer.

The Scarlet Raiders finished with a 17-6 advantage in shots and held a 10-5 edge in corner kicks. David Bejarno made three saves in goal to help preserve the victory.

Rutgers-Newark will return to action Tuesday, September 16, hosting Manhattanville at Frederick Douglass Field for the Adrian Velazquez Memorial.
