NEWARK, N.J. — The Rutgers-Newark women's soccer team battled Eastern University to a 0-0 draw Saturday evening at Frederick Douglass Field.
The Scarlet Raiders move to 3-1-3 on the season following the draw, while Eastern moves to 2-3-1.
Rutgers-Newark controlled much of the offensive pressure, recording nine shots compared to five for Eastern and putting eight attempts on target. Genesis Sarango led the Scarlet Raiders with three shots, all of which were on goal.
Rutgers-Newark goalkeeper Maura Chawner turned in another strong performance, making three saves to earn her third shutout of the season and second of the week. Eastern goalkeeper Faith Leake kept the Scarlet Raiders off the scoreboard with eight saves.
The Scarlet Raiders created several opportunities early, with Young and Sarango testing Leake inside the opening 10 minutes. Evans added another shot on target in the 31st minute, while Candido forced another save late in the opening half.
Rutgers-Newark continued to pressure after halftime, as Fernandez and Sarango each put shots on goal during the opening 10 minutes of the second half. Mullen and Sarango added additional opportunities later in the period, but Leake continued to keep the Scarlet Raiders off the board.
Eastern generated a pair of late chances, but Chawner denied attempts by Corrine Myers in the 75th minute and Katelyn Mason in the 82nd minute to preserve the shutout.
Rutgers-Newark returns to action Wednesday, September 23rd for Senior Day as they host the Cardinals of York College (NY).
