RUTGERS-NEWARK MEN'S BASKETBALL

NEWARK, NJ – Special presentations were made to men’s basketball head coach Joe Loughran and junior forward Christian Garcia prior to Saturday’s 81-65 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rowan in The Golden Dome Arena.

Director of Athletics Mark Griffin presented Loughran with a souvenir basketball commemorating his 200th career victory at Rutgers-Newark – a 73-63 win over NJAC foe Richard Stockton on February 1 in The Dome.

Then Griffin and Loughran welcomed Garcia to the 1,000-point club at Rutgers-Newark with a ball commemorating his 1,000th career point netted in an 82-52 romp against Rutgers-Camden in The Dome on January 22.  Garcia went five of eight from the floor in the second half, cashing in his 1000th point on a driving layup with 15:44 left in the game to boost the Scarlet Raiders’ lead to 41-20.  He finished the night with 1,005 career points in just 76 games.  He added eight rebounds, four assists, a blocked shot and a steal to his line for the night.

He netted 16 points in the win over Rowan on Saturday to push his career point total to 1,084 and climb to ninth place on the Rutgers-Newark all-time men's basketball scoring chart.  He needs just one more point to catch the No. 8 scorer - Scarlet Raider assistant coach Deshawn Singleton (2006-10).
