Dan Lopez is in his first season as a member of the Rutgers University-Newark baseball coaching staff in 2016 after playing for Head Coach Mark Rizzi over the previous four years.
Lopez will assist in all aspects of the program, but will be a prime resource for the catchers on the 2016 squad. The Union City native caught for R-N throughout his career and was a marvelous defensive backstop, throwing out 50 percent of baserunners trying to steal and never being charged with an error in 33 career appearances.
A career .246 hitter, Lopez ended his career with a sparkling .333 batting average as a senior, tallying nine hits and scoring five runs. He slugged .407 in his final season as a player in Newark, totaling nine RBI and four walks.
An All-County performer at Union City High School in Hudson County, Lopez was born in Jamaica, Queens.
