Deon Mingo

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Deon Mingo joined Joe Loughran’s staff in September of 2012, bringing experience as an assistant coach at the collegiate and high school level to the men’s basketball staff.

A native of Guyana who moved to the United States with his family in 1985, Mingo brings a worldly view to the most diverse university campus in America. The Newark resident was a three-year letterman and a senior captain at East Orange High School in 1999 before going on to play college basketball.

Mingo played two seasons at the County College of Morris before finishing his playing career at Bloomfield College where he received his bachelor’s degree in sociology and criminal justice in 2007.  He completed work on a master’s degree in sports administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 2009.

As a player at Bloomfield, he helped the Deacons to back-to-back Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) titles and consecutive NCAA Division II Championship Tournament berths for head coach Gerald Holmes.

He served as an assistant coach at Bloomfield from 2006 to 2008 before serving for four seasons as an assistant boys' basketball coach at the Dwight Englewood School.  DES posted records of 21-1 in 2010-11 and 22-5 in 2011-12.

Mingo wants to pursue a career as a basketball head coach at the high school or collegiate level, and he chose to come to Rutgers-Newark to learn from Loughran who is the winningest coach in Scarlet Raider basketball history.

“Coaching helps me fulfill my passion for basketball and it’s an opportunity to help student-athletes become the best they can be on and off the court,” states Mingo.
