One of the most decorated players of the Joe Loughran era at Rutgers-Newark, Deshawn Singleton enters his fourth year as an assistant coach.
A two-time selection on the New Jersey Athletic Conference, NABC Atlantic Region and Metropolitan Basketball Writers all-star teams, the former power forward became just the 11th Scarlet Raider to amass 1,000 points. He finished his career with 1,085 points and, more importantly, led his team to the program’s first-ever NCAA Division III Championship Tournament berth in 2010.
Singleton notched a career averages of 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds while helping the Raiders for three NJAC and three ECAC Metro playoff berths as well as the NCAA invitation. Rutgers-Newark compiled a record of 68-54 during his playing days.
He was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week three times in 2006-07 and was named the 2008-09 Rutgers-Newark Male Athlete of the Year.
During his junior year, he averaged 14.9 points and 5.9 rebounds a game to help power the Raiders to the NJAC Championship Tournament finals for the first time in program history. He earned first team All-NJAC and All-ECAC Metro nods for the effort.
