Graduate intern James Cormier brings the focus he developed as a three-year starter and four-year letterman at NCAA D-II LeMoyne College to the Rutgers-Newark basketball staff.
He is working on a master’s degree in liberal studies at Rutgers-Newark after earning his bachelor of science in business management from LeMoyne in 2012.
Cormier started in the backcourt for LeMoyne as a freshman, sophomore and senior, piling up 515 points, 265 assists and 79 steals while draining 99 3-point jumpers. He started all 30 games as a freshman, earning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week honors after helping the Dolphins to the conference tournament championship game and a 20-11 record. He handed out 89 assists and netted 183 points as a rookie, knocking down 38 treys. He helped the Dolphins to an 18-10 finish as a sophomore. In his junior year, Cormier dished out 96 assists while averaging 5.3 points a game. He also made an impressive 82.1% (29-36) of his free throws. As a senior, he served as team captain.
From Trumbull (CT) High School, Cormier went to Proctor Academy in Andover, NH, where he blossomed into a three-sport athlete in basketball, football and baseball during a two-year stint, serving as team captain in each sport.
Cormier is the fourth graduate intern in the Scarlet Raider men’s basketball program – and all three of his predecessors have gone on to collegiate assistant coaching jobs. That fits in nicely with his goal of becoming a collegiate head coach.
