Mike Byrne is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Rutgers University-Newark men’s basketball coaching staff.
Mike played at both Bergen Catholic High School and Wood-Ridge High School, where he was an All-League selection. He also played for the Bergen Community College Bulldogs as well as the SUNY Farmingdale State College Rams; both preseason nationally ranked.
He then served as Head Assistant Varsity Coach at Bergen Catholic High School for 3 years before taking over as Head Junior Varsity Coach; where he led his team to a 23-3 record.
In 2016-17, as the newly appointed Associate Head Coach for the Dwight-Englewood Bulldogs, Mike provided coaching and mentoring that led the team to their best season in school history. The Bulldogs finished the season 24-5 before losing in the state sectional semifinals to Hudson Catholic, the eventual Tournament of Champions winner.
Mike has worked several Hoop Group events such as Hoop Group Elite, Future All American, and both the Philly and Metro Top 100s. He has also served as Head Trainer/Clinician for the Hoop Dreamz AAU program since 2010. There he has trained over 30 Division I players as well as countless other Division II & III athletes. His passion for youth enrichment, coaching and mentoring has also brought him to be a paraprofessional for the Maywood Public School District.
