Christian Portera joined the Rutgers University-Newark coaching staff in the fall of 2014 with a quickly growing resume. He is currently in his third season on the Newark bench.
He helped the Scarlet Raiders to a 22-10 mark in 2015, guiding the program to the 'Elite Eight' of the NCAA Tournament and a CVC title. Portera worked with second-team AVCA All-American Cody Chidsey as a total of three Scarlet Raiders earned all-conference honors in what was a magical season for the program.

The head girls’ volleyball coach at East Brunswick High School in 2014 while helping the St. Joseph’s High School boys’ junior varsity to records of 13-2 in 2013 and 14-1 in 2014, Portera was a charter member of the Kean University men’s volleyball program in 2011.

A two-year team captain at Kean, Portera helped the Cougars to an NCAA D-III final eight appearance as the team’s MVP as a senior in 2012. Kean went 25-11, taking the Skyline Conference regular season and tournament titles with Portera earning first-team all-conference honors.

At East Brunswick High School, he earned All-State first team honors as a senior in 2008 after helping the Bears to a 2007 NJSIAA championship as a junior.

Portera received his bachelor of arts in physical education from Kean in 2012 and is a physical education teacher at East Brunswick.
