Director of Athletics Mark Griffin named Cody Chidsey the new head coach of the Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball program, effective immediately, for the 2019 season.
A two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American
Chidsey previously served on the Scarlet Raiders coaching staff as a graduate assistant for the 2017 and 2018 campaigns.
Chidsey completed his volleyball eligibility at Rutgers-Newark at the NCAA Tournament in late-April of 2016 and is currently finishing his undergraduate degree in Geology and Environmental Science at R-N. The Bath, Pa. native was not only one of the top players in Rutgers-Newark men's volleyball history, but he was a standout in the Rutgers-Newark community.
"Cody has made the most of his time here at Rutgers-Newark and I could not be more pleased to have him stay with the program the next few years," said Trevino. "He was a phenomenal player, but most importantly he was a great student and he was involved in the campus community. He knows what it takes to be successful as a collegiate athlete and student, and that is going to great for us as he works with the younger student-athletes in our program.
Chidsey was an AVCA All-American in 2015 and 2016, leading the Scarlet Raiders to two appearances in the "Elite Eight" of the NCAA Tournament.
He was the 2014-15 Rutgers-Newark Male Athlete of the Year and was the first-ever winner of the Gerald Massenburg Award in 2015-16. The Pennsylvania native was the 2015 Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) Player of the Year and a two-time all-conference performer, twice earning AVCA National Player of the Week honors during his junior season.
Chidsey finished third nationally in hitting percentage as a junior, backing up that mark by finishing sixth as a senior. He finished his career at Rutgers-Newark with a remarkable .377 hitting percentage, totaling 845 kills, 248 blocks and 58 aces in 111 matches (384 sets).
The Scarlet Raiders compiled an overall record of 46-14 during his final two seasons in Newark, helping R-N to a CVC title and an overall record of 21-3 inside the league.
Outside of the volleyball court, Chidsey was a fantastic student, maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of 3.65-plus. He was also a Resident Assistant (RA), Teacher's Assistant (TA) and a member of the Geology Club.
He has past coaching experience with Lehigh Valley Premier Volleyball in his home state of Pennsylvania as well as New Jersey Premier Volleyball based in Metuchen.
