Gary Moore was named the Associate Head Women’s Volleyball Coach and Assistant Men’s Volleyball Coach at Rutgers-Newark in August of 2007, becoming the first staff member hired by newly-appointed Head Men’s Volleyball Coach and Coordinator of Volleyball Operations Karl France.
Moore, who will serve as the primary mentor of the Scarlet Raiders’ Division III women’s volleyball squad, brings a solid background as a coach and instructor at the collegiate and club level.
The Virginia native comes to Newark after serving for six years as boys’ head coach and vice president for the Coastal Virginia Volleyball Club in Chesapeake where he coached four squads to Open National berths. He helped direct a major club program which managed seven teams and 16 coaches.
During that time, he also has served as a USA Volleyball men’s assistant and apprentice coach. In 2004 and 2005, he was an apprentice coach for the USA Men’s Junior National Team with the squads placing second in the 2004 NORCECA World Qualifiers in 2004 and eighth in the 2005 World Championships in 2005. In 2006 he started a stint as an assistant coach for the USA Youth National Team, helping the squad to top finish the High Performance International Championships.
Moore broke into college coaching in 2001, helping the Christopher Newport University women’s team to a 24-11 record, a Dixie Conference regular season and tournament crowns, and an NCAA Division III tournament berth as a volunteer assistant. Hired as a regular assistant in 2002, he helped the Captains improve to 24-8 while repeating their conference titles and NCAA appearance. Three players earned All-Dixie Conference laurels in each of his seasons while two players were named to the Virginia All-State team each year.
He advanced to Division I Norfolk State University in 2003, concentrating on recruiting and player development during his one-year tenure.
Moore’s constant arc of development can be traced to his college career where he moved from a record-setting two-year start at Division III Eastern Mennonite University in 1996-1997 to two years as a player at Division I George Mason. After setting single seasons record for blocks and hitting efficiency at Eastern Mennonite, Moore moved up to George Mason to cap his playing career in the same conference with Rutgers-Newark’s men’s volleyball team.
While at GMU, Moore got involved in coaching with the Tidewater Volleyball Association in Virginia Beach. He helped the program’s 18-National Boys team to finishes of sixth and ninth in the Open Nationals – catching the coaching bug in the process.
At Princess Anne High School, he set career and single season blocking records in his senior year on his way to All-Beach District honors and a team MVP award.
Moore earned a bachelor of science in health fitness and exercise science from Norfolk State in 2006, graduating Magna cum Laude.
