Pioneers End Scarlet Raider NJAC Tournament Hopes

WAYNE, NJ – Sophomore middle blocker Crystal Navarro (Passaic, NJ/Passaic HS) had six kills to lead Rutgers-Newark, but William Paterson posted a 25-9, 25-14, 25-8 New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball win in the WPU Rec Center.

The loss knocked the Scarlet Raiders (3-26, NJAC 1-7) out of a possible NJAC Championship tournament berth while the Pioneers (19-7, NJAC 3-5) earned their second straight-set win over Rutgers-Newark in the past 11 days.

Freshman outside hitter Toni Moppert (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) and sophomore middle blocker Na-Keta Michael (Newark, NJ/West Side) had three kills apiece as the Raiders struggled offensively, totaling just 16 putaways on the night.

Junior outside hitter Rose Anna Beljour (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) delivered both of the Raiders' aces while adding two kills and six digs. Junior libero Val Dauti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) led the team with seven digs.

Junior Kelly Helfrich posted match-high totals of 10 kills and 15 digs to pace the Pioneers who locked up an NJAC tourney berth with the win. Helfrich hit .471 (10 kills, 2 errors, 17 attacks) to pace WPU to a .371 hitting performance.

Rutgers-Newark caps its season on Saturday in Maryland, playing host St. Mary's College at 10 a.m. before squaring off against Cabrini at noon.
