UNION, NJ – Senior midfielder
Tyler Chiara headed in the lone goal with just 17 seconds left in the second overtime as Rutgers-Newark took a marathon 1-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer decision over Kean.
Rutgers-Newark 1, Kean 0 (2OT)
Chiara's fourth goal of the season settled a tightly-contested battle, giving the Scarlet Raiders (9-3-4, NJAC 3-2-2) a 2-1-4 record in a school-record seven double-overtime matches this season. The Cougars (6-7-3, NJAC 1-5-1) fell to the Scarlet Raiders for just the second time in series history.
Sophomore defender
Mike Trenard lofted a crossing pass from 40-yards out on the left side as time was running out. Chiara raced past defenders, catching up with the pass about 15 yards in front of the right post. His header crossed into the upper corner of the left side to send the Scarlet Raiders into a wild celebration.
It marked the first win over Kean at Rutgers-Newark for head coach
Kevin East – a former Cougar All-America goalkeeper under head coach
Tony Ochrimenko.
Junior goalkeeper
Matt Zielyk (7-3-4) made four saves to post his seventh shutout of the season and help extend the Raiders' unbeaten streak to seven matches. Rutgers-Newark is 5-0-2 in its last seven outings.
The game was as close as the score with each team taking 14 shots. The Cougars held the edge in corner kicks, 9-4, while the Raiders put two more shots on goal.
Kean goalkeeper
Alfredo Oquendo was the tough-luck loser despite making five saves.
Rutgers-Newark hosts John Jay in a non-conference tilt on Monday at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field.
