Defenses Dominate In Double Overtime Tie With WPU

Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer

Matt Zielyk
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark junior goalkeeper Matt Zielyk made four saves as the Scarlet Raiders battled to a scoreless double-overtime tie with William Paterson on Alumni Field in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer match.

Rutgers-Newark 0, William Paterson 0 (2OT)

Zielyk (4-3-3) notched his fifth shutout of the season, getting plenty of help from his defensive teammates who stopped four Pioneer shots on goal. Zielyk preserved the win with a save against WPU junior back Chris Belan in the second overtime as the Raiders withstood three Pioneer shots in the final 10 minutes.

In the other net, senior Dan Peragallo was equally impressive, making six saves to post his third shutout of the season. His diving finger-tip deflection of a shot by sophomore midfielder Ronald Quiroz in the 11th minute helped send the match into extra periods. He also got two stops in goal by his teammates.

The Raiders (5-3-3, NJAC 1-2-1) held a slim 16-14 edge in shots and both squads to eight shots on goal. The Pioneers (5-1-4, NJAC 0-0-3) built up a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks in the tightly-contested battle.

It marked the second consecutive tie for the teams who fought to a 1-1 double-overtime score in last season's ECAC Metro Championship match before the Pioneers claimed the crown in a shootout round.

The Raiders now have a tie and a win in their last two NJAC matches after a 0-2-0 start.

Rutgers-Newark now gets the weekend off before taking on the College of Staten Island on Monday at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field in a non-conference match.
