Rowan Edges Scarlet Raiders In Overtime, 1-0

Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark controlled play for most of the day, but Rowan slipped past the Scarlet Raiders, 1-0 in overtime, for a New Jersey Athletic Conference win on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Rowan senior midfielder John Loiodice ended the match with a shot inside the far post in the 100th minute after Rutgers-Newark (8-6-1, NJAC 1-5-1) had out-shot Rowan, 23-10, and taken 10 corner kicks to the visitors' two. But the Raiders could not finish and suffered their sixth shutout in seven NJAC matches.

Senior goalkeeper Charlie Cunliffe stopped 10 shots to post his fourth shutout of the season, but he got a big hand from freshman back Lou Buonocore. Buonocore darted in front of the left side of an open goal to boot away a true shot by Scarlet Raider sophomore forward Jervis Witherspoon at 79:25. That stop was crucial in reaching the extra period for the Profs (3-10-2, NJAC 1-6-0).

Sophomore midfielder Ryan Gordon completed a breakaway run up the right side by rolling a crossing pass to Loiodice on the left side of the box. Loiodice punched a low shot inside the right post with just 45 seconds left in the first overtime period.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Frances made three saves, including two in overtime.

The loss knocked the Raiders out of contention for one of six NJAC Championship Tournament berths a season after the program reached the league's post-season playoffs for the first time.

Rutgers-Newark hosts York (NY) College in a non-conference match on 7 p.m. Monday on Alumni Field.
