Rutgers-Newark Men's Soccer

Kofi Agyemang
NEWARK, NJ – Montclair State notched a goal just 4:17 into the match and the Red Hawks made it stand up for a 1-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win over Rutgers-Newark on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Junior forward Mike Pytlar ran onto a through pass from beyond midfield off the foot of freshman midfielder Dan Mendoza, sprinted 30 yards down the right side of the pitch and fired a shot into the opposite side of the goal against a diving save attempt by Scarlet Raider sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Frances.

Frances then made four saves to match the total of Red Hawk sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Rogic who notched his fifth shutout of the season. All of Rogic's saves came during a frantic, well-played second half.

Rutgers-Newark suffered its third consecutive no-goal match in NJAC play.

In the 83rd minute, Raider junior midfielder Kofi Agyemang rifled a shot that was blocked near the left corner of the box. Junior midfielder Estiven Benitez collected the rebound and hammered a shot at the left side where Rogic deflected the ball up off the crossbar. The ball ricocheted back down into Rogic's arms before he cleared the ball out to the left side. Rutgers-Newark got a corner kick, but Rogic had robbed Rutgers-Newark of its best chance to level the score.

Agyemang also banged a free kick off the crossbar from 25 yards out in the 78th minute.

The Red Hawks (6-1-2, NJAC 3-0-0) host Rutgers-Camden at 1 p.m. on Saturday while Rutgers-Newark (6-3-1, NJAC 0-2-1) travel to The College of New Jersey for a 7 o'clock NJAC contest.
