NEWARK, N.J. - Rutgers-Newark scored early, but William Paterson rallied for a 2-1 overtime win in a New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Tournament opening round contest on Alumni Field.
BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Freshman forward
Ardian Djeka put away a header off of a free kick by junior midfielder
Nick Kyprianou just 3:03 into the match, but that was the only goal the Scarlet Radiers (11-8-2) would tally in the twice postponed match.
Graduate student Joe Strawman scored both goals for the third-seeded Pioneers (13-3-3) to put them into Wednesday's semifinals at second-seeded Montclair State at 2 p.m.
Strawman scored the game winner 2:48 into overtime, controlling a loose ball on the left side of the box and firing it off of the inside of the right post. He evened the match in the 39th minute, cleaning up a driven ball by senior Domenick Candelieri that the Rutgers-Newark defense could not clear.
WP nearly took the lead with 1:46 remaining in overtime when it was awarded a penalty kick after a hand ball by the Scarlet Raiders in the box, but Anthony Ferrer's attempt sailed well high of the crossbar.
WP's Zach Collins made one save, and junir goalkeeper Matt Linberg had four for Rutgers-Newark.
Due to a snowstorm on Oct. 29, the match was moved from William Paterson's natural-grass Pioneer Soccer Park to the artificial turf of the Raiders' Alumni Field.
Rutgers-Newark will wait for a probable invitation to the ECAC Metro Championship Tournament. The field will be announced next Monday.
