Scarlet Raiders Suffer First Loss Of Season To Rutgers-Camden

NEWARK, NJ – Icy shooting led to Rutgers-Newark's first defeat of the season in a 58-49 New Jersey Athletic Conference loss to Rutgers-Camden in The Golden Dome Arena.

Rutgers-Newark was paced by sophomore forward Jasmine Daniels with 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals, but she was the only Raider in double digits in points.  Freshman forward Jade Howard tallied eight points and six rebounds while sophomore guard ShaQuanna Marshall tallied six points, five rebounds and five assists.  Senior guard Brittany Smith had a game-high five steals to go along with five points, five rebounds and two assists.

But the Raiders hit just one of 11 3-point jumpers and shot just 32.4% (22-68) overall to suffer their first loss to the Scarlet Raptors snapped a 9-game losing streak in the series dating back to January 5, 2005.

Senior forward Brittany Turner paced Rutgers-Camden with 15 points, 13 rebounds and six assists as to lead Rutgers-Camden.  Turner sank nine of 12 free throws as the Raptors (4-1, NJAC 1-1) won the game at the free throw line by out-scoring the Scarlet Raiders (5-1, NJAC 1-1), 17-4, to overcome 34 turnovers.

Senior guard Kristina Cox had two treys during a decisive 17-4 run which staked the Raptors to a 57-47 lead with 2:51 left.  Cox finished with 10 points while freshman guard Lillian Chukwueze barely missed a double-double with a dozen rebounds and nine points as Rutgers-Camden dominated the boards, 50-31.  Senior forward Stephanie Deisley hit six of 10 shots from the floor on the way to a dozen points.

A 3-point jumper by Cox capped a 10-3 which gave the Raptors a 26-23 lead with 18 seconds left in a first half which featured three ties and five lead changes to go along with 29 turnovers.  Marshall slashed down the right side of the lane for a layup with four seconds left cut the Raiders' halftime deficit to one. 

In the opening half, Turner hit four of five free throws as the Raptors made nine of 13 charity tosses to overcome 19 turnovers.  The Raiders, who made just 11 of 35 field goal tries in the opening 20 minutes, missed all five of their 3-point attempts while getting out-rebounded 27-18.

It was the final home game of the calendar year for the Raiders who will hit the road for five contests before hosting UMass-Boston in The Dome on January 3.

Rutgers-Newark visits York NY for a women's and men's non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.  The women tip off at 6 p.m. before the men begin at 8 o'clock.
