Scarlet Raiders Could Be Home For NJAC Opening Round

Rutgers-Newark Women's Basketball

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark could be hosting a New Jersey Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Championship Tournament game on Saturday if Wednesday night's league results mirror last night's.

The Scarlet Raiders (16-8, NJAC 6-7) earned a berth in the NJAC playoffs on Saturday with a 65-60 overtime win against Montclair State (12-12, NJAC 5-7), but they will need a little help from the Red Hawks on Wednesday to secure the No. 2 seed in the North Division and a home game for the six-team tournament's opening round on Saturday.

The Raiders will be in the championship for the sixth time in the last seven seasons after having missed the field last season to break a string of five straight appearances under 10th-year head coach Kevin Morris.

Monday night, division-leading William Paterson (21-3, NJAC 10-2) slipped past Ramapo (15-9, NJAC 5-7), 60-55, in Mahwah while Montclair State (12-12, NJAC 12-12) was shutting down New Jersey City (5-19, NJAC 0-12), 67-31 in Jersey City. Ramapo visits WPU and NJCU is at Montclair State on Wednesday night for regular-season finales which will determine whether the Raiders are home or away on Saturday.

Wins by William Paterson and Montclair State would eliminate Ramapo, put the Red Hawks in as the No. 3 seed in the division, and boost Rutgers-Newark into a No. 2 finish in the North Division. A Ramapo upset of William Paterson would give the Roadrunners the No. 2 slot in the North and opening-round home court honors for Saturday, while ending Montclair State's season.

Losses on Wednesday by Ramapo and Montclair State would give the Roadrunners the No. 3 slot, eliminate MSU and hand the Raiders to the No. 2 seed.

Should things fall Rutgers-Newark's way, the Raiders will host either The College of New Jersey (13-10, NJAC 6-6) or Rowan (12-10, NJAC 7-5) on Saturday at 7 p.m. in The Golden Dome. Rowan hosts TCNJ at 6 p.m. on Wednesday with the winner garnering the No. 3 seed from the South Division and the loser being eliminated.

Should Ramapo topple WPU, the Raiders would travel to Richard Stockton (17-7, NJAC 9-3) on Saturday for a 1 p.m. opening round contest.
