NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark hosts the College of Staten Island on Wednesday in the nightcap of a women's and men's ECAC Metro Championship doubleheader in The Golden Dome.
The Scarlet Raider men (17-7), seeded fourth in the 8-team tournament, host the fifth-seeded Dolphins (17-9) at 8 p.m. after the top-seeded Rutgers-Newark women (19-9) host an opponent to be announced in the 6 o'clock opener.
In the men's bracket, the Raiders-Dolphins winner will play the winner of the top-seeded St. Joseph's LI takes on No. 8 NYU opening round match in Saturday's semifinal round. A Raider win and an NYU loss would give Rutgers-Newark a home game.
In other opening round matchups, No. 3 Mount St. Mary hosts No. 6 Richard Stockton while No. 7 Baruch travels to No. 2 Stevens.
This marks Rutgers-Newark's sixth trip to the ECAC Metro Championship in the last seven seasons under 10th-year head coach
Joe Loughran. The Raiders earned their first NCAA Division III Championship berth in 2010 to break the string.
Rutgers-Newark won the ECAC title in 1996 and will be entering its eighth tournament. During the recent string of tournament performances (2004-09), the Raiders advance to the second round three times. NYU nipped Rutgers-Newark, 76-74, in the 2010 semifinals.
