Scarlet Raiders Fall In Defensive Struggle Against Widener

NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior goalkeeper Danielle Griscom had an solid game, but Widener junior goalkeeper Vanessa Hejnas was a little better as the Scarlet Raiders fell to the Pride, 1-0, in the Scarlet Raider Soccer Classic on Alumni Field. New Paltz downed Carthage, 4-1, in the title game.

Griscom stopped six shots while Hejnas made eight saves in the defensive struggle which was decided on an unassisted goal by Widener senior forward Brittany Harvis. Harvis scored the lone goal of the game on a shot it into the lower right side in the 30th minute of the first half just past a diving Griscom.
The Pride (1-2-1) outshot the Scarlet Raiders (2-4-0), 17-13 and had a 9-4 edge in corner kicks.

In the title match, tournament MVP Shelby Kondelka scored the first goal and assisted on the final tally as the Hawks (3-2-0) stopped the Lady Reds (1-2-1) who had scored seven goals on Friday against the Raiders.

The Raiders will host Old Westbury at Alumni Field, on Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m.
