Old Westbury Downs Rutgers-Newark, 3-1

RUTGERS-NEWARK WOMEN'S SOCCER

Sarah Cunha
NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark senior forward Liana Abreu scored her 10th goal of the season, but Old Westbury got a pair of second-half tallies to take a 3-1 non-conference decision on Alumni Field.

BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY

Abreu notched her 10th marker of the season in the 37th minute to level the score at 1-1, but for the second match in a row a shot advantage did not result in a win.  The Scarlet Raiders (2-5-0) outshot the Panthers, 21-14, but Old Westbury put three more shots on goal (9-6).

Raider senior goalkeeper Danielle Griscom made six saves while Panther freshman Caitlin Thomas came up with five stops.

In the early going, Rutgers-Newark controlled play while taking the first six shots of the match.  But after missing several good chances at scoring, the Raiders fell back into an even battle against the visitors.

Sophomore Samantha Clancy wrapped a pair of goals around the game-winning tally by freshman forward Stephanie Maybie in the 52nd minute.  Maybie chased down a through pass in the left corner, dribbled back to about 30 yards out on the left side and hammered the game winner across the goal high into the right side past a diving Griscom.  Clancy put away a pair of loose balls after scrambles in the goal mouth.

Abreu has scored 10 of the Raiders' 11 goals on the season.

Rutgers-Newark, which fell for the third time in a row, now faces a rugged string of five straight New Jersey Athletic Conference matches starting with a league-opening road trip to Rutgers-Camden on Saturday.  Match time is 1 p.m.
