NEWARK, NJ – Sophomore point guard ShaQuanna Marshall came up the big plays in the final seconds as Rutgers-Newark battled past Richard Stockton for a 44-41 New Jersey Athletic Conference win in The Golden Dome.

Marshall canned a pair of free throws to break a 40-40 tie with 1:12 remaining, then made a steal and fed senior guard Kendra Johnson for a breakaway bucket with 46 seconds left to spell the difference.

Junior forward Che'Na Thompson had nine of her game-high 16 points and 10 of her game-high 15 rebounds as the Ospreys (12-8, NJAC 4-5) struggled to a 17-14 halftime lead.  The Scarlet Raiders (15-5, NJAC 6-3) shot just 13.5% (5-37) in the first period and made just one of 16 3-point attempts.

Johnson had seven of her team-high 15 points as Rutgers-Newark opened the second half with an 13-2 run to take a 27-19 lead with 14:42 left.

But a 3-point jumper by freshman guard Brittany Smith gave RSC a 35-33 lead with 6:49 left and set up a see-saw race to the final buzzer.  There were three ties and three lead changes before Marshall's free throw put the Raiders ahead for keeps.

Senior forward Lori Nieves had a dozen rebounds, 11 points, three steals and two blocked shots for Rutgers-Newark while Johnson finished with 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals.  Marshall added seven points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

Senior center LaTonya Oliver hauled down 13 rebounds and netted six points for the Ospreys.

Rutgers-Newark is at Montclair State for an NJAC doubleheader on Saturday.  The men tip off at 1 p.m. with the women to follow at 3.
