NEWARK, NJ – Senior guard
Kendra Johnson poured in a career-high 27 points, nailing six of nine 3-point attempts, to spark Rutgers-Newark to a 65-40 win over Brooklyn College in The Golden Dome Arena.
Johnson, whose 27 points were an individual high for any Raider this season, dropped in back-to-back treys to ignite a 16-0 run which staked Rutgers-Newark to a 16-2 lead with less than six minutes gone in the contest. She also added five assists and three steals while hitting 10 of 15 shots from the floor to help the Raiders connect on 49.1% (27-55) of their field goal tries.
Senior guard
Brittany Smith had nine points, three assists and a game-high five steals as the Raiders came up with 17 steals. Sophomore guard
ShaQuanna Marshall came off the bench for eight points, eight rebounds and five assists while senior forward
Lori Nieves posted eight points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.
In her first starting assignment, freshman center
Sharee Gordon posted six points, five rebounds and two blocked shots while freshman guard
Arianna Williams totaled six points, three assists and three steals as Rutgers-Newark (11-3) won its fourth straight game. Sophomore guard
Jasmine Daniels pulled down seven rebounds and came up with a pair of steals to offset a 1-point night.
Senior guard Lauren Plagainos hit three long-range jumpers on her way to a team-high 13 points for the Bulldogs (8-5), but she was the only Brooklyn College player in double digits. Senior forward Justine O'Callahan hit four of seven shots from the floor for eight points while junior center Tiffany Thompson hauled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
Plagainos had eight points, including a pair of treys, as Brooklyn put together a 14-4 run to reel the Raiders back to within four points at 20-16 with 5:08 left in the opening half. But that was as close as Brooklyn College would get.
A Johnson 3-point jumper staked the Raiders to a 30-22 halftime edge and gave her 16 points at the break. Rutgers-Newark pulled away to lead by as many as 29 points in the second period.
