NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark battled No. 7 Stevens Institute on even terms for 90 minutes, but the Scarlet Raiders fell, 1-0, under the lights on Alumni Field.
BOX SCORE & PLAY-BY-PLAY
Rutgers-Newark (11-6-0) saw its 6-game winning streak snapped by the Ducks (13-2-0) who reeled off their 11th consecutive victory behind a lone goal by junior forward Stephen Dunbar following a literal defensive slip 35 minutes into the match.
Freshman forward Joe Cellitti raced side-by-side with a Raider defender down the left half in a battle to control a through ball before the Rutgers-Newark player stumbled to the turf. Cellitti dribbled the ball near the goal line on the left side and fired a high shot which freshman goalkeeper
Matt Broomall leaped to deflect on the left side of the goal. Dunbar was waiting alone on the right side of the box to head in the deflection.
Broomall and Duck junior Paul Killian notched three saves apiece in the battle.
Sophomore forward
Edgar Abreu forced Killian to make a save just 2:20 into the contest, then senior midfielder
Gabriel Avans and sophomore midfielder Donado put shots on the Duck goal in the second half.
Duck senior forward Victory Daza banged a shot off the crossbar in the 55th minute.
Stevens rode a 10-2 edge in shots in the first half to a 17-10 advantage for the match. The Ducks also held a slim 4-3 lead in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Newark travels to William Paterson on Saturday for a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference match. The Raiders, 4-3-0 in the NJAC, can lock up one of six league championship playoff berths with a victory in the 1 p.m. clash.
