NEWARK, NJ – Rutgers-Newark employed smothering defense and an opportunistic attack to down FDU-Florham, 2-0, in a non-conference match on Alumni Field.

Senior midfielder
Gabriel Avans fired a 30-yard shot into the right side of the net in the 13th minute following a transition turnover by the Devils (5-8) to provide the only point that the Scarlet Raiders (8-5) would need.
The Raiders added an insurance goal in the 54th minute when Rosario lofted a cross from 25 yards out on the right side into the left side of the box where Tarnawski netted his first career goal by going airborne to kick the pass inside the left post.
The Devils had their chances. Junior forward Ryan Hurdes banged a free kick off the right post from 20 yards out in the 15th minute. In the 60th minute, Hurdes had a shot from 15 yards out on that was blocked. The rebound went to the left side where senior midfielder Emin Matezic blasted a shot from 10 yards out that Broomall stopped.
Freshman goalkeeper Andrew D'Angelo made two first-half saves for FDU-Florham as the teams finished level in shots at 11 apiece. The Raiders piled up a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Newark hosts Old Westbury at 7:30 Monday night on Alumni Field to end a string of three straight non-league matches. The Raiders reenter New Jersey Athletic Conference competition at New Jersey City on October 10.
